Zambia continues to experience severe climate change effects, with alternating floods and droughts wreaking havoc on communities. The Zimba District, once the agricultural heart of the country, has suffered extensive crop failures due to extreme weather conditions. The 2023-24 rainy season brought devastating drought, leading to a 95-100% crop failure, severe food shortages, and livestock losses due to water scarcity.
Recognizing this urgent need, World Forgotten Children Foundation (WFCF) partnered with the Kocebuka Community Foundation (KCF) to establish a sustainable water system in the Sijabala community. This initiative aims to provide a reliable, year-round water source, empowering local households to engage in agriculture and improve food security.
Challenges Encountered
The project faced some setbacks. Heavy rains made access to the community difficult, with overflowing streams and muddy terrain preventing the transportation of drilling equipment. Despite these obstacles, the project team remained committed and overcame these challenges.
Current Progress
Despite delays, significant progress has been made:
- Borehole siting completed
- Borehole drilling successfully conducted
- Pump testing and borehole yield assessment finalized
- Perimeter mapping completed
Next Steps
With the borehole successfully drilled, the project is now moving into the next critical phase:
- Procurement and installation of a solar-powered water system
- Procurement of a tank stand
- Procurement of a water storage tank
These upcoming steps will ensure a continuous, sustainable supply of clean water for the Sijabala community, enhancing both food security and economic stability.

Looking Ahead
This project is a crucial step toward climate resilience for the Zimba District, offering a model for sustainable water access. WFCF remains committed to addressing the needs of underprivileged communities and ensuring that no child goes without the resources they need to thrive. We will continue to provide updates as we advance toward the completion of the Zambia Well Project.
Thank you to our supporters for making this vital work possible. Stay tuned for further developments!
