World Water Day 2026: Water and Gender

By World Forgotten Children Foundation on Mar 12, 2026

World Water Day has been held on March 22nd annually since 1993. The driving force behind this day of observation is to highlight the importance of fresh water and water related issues. World Water Day aims to bring awareness of the 2.1 billion people living without access to safe water. It also encourages taking initiative to help alleviate the global water crisis.

The Theme for 2026: Water and Gender

The global water crisis touches everyone, but its effects are far from equal. The slogan for this year’s World Water Day is “Where water flows, equality grows.”

In communities where people don’t have access to safe drinking water and sanitation, inequalities rise, with women and girls feeling most of the burden.

Despite how women and girls collect and manage water, while caring for those who feel the effects of unsafe water, women and girls often jeopardize their own health and safety in the process. Systems that govern water typically don’t incorporate women in their decision-making, leadership, funding, or representation. In fact, approximately 14% of countries still have no mechanisms to ensure women can participate equally in water-related decision-making and water management.

Unsafe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene are globally responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,000 children under the age of five each day.

Key Takeaways for World Water Day 2026

When communities are denied their human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, inequalities deepen—especially for women and girls, who shoulder the greatest burdens.

Women must help shape the future of water. To build water systems that can serve all people, a transformative, rights‑based approach is needed, one that incorporates women’s voices, leadership, and agency and prioritizes children.
